Travel to Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer is undoubtedly one of the most exotic of travel destinations, made even more spectacular by majestic sandcastle-like fort, the ambiance of medieval palaces and havelis and the spell exerted by the mystical landscapes of the That Desert.
Though the town no longer sports the riches of its heyday during the medieval period, it still casts an allure that's hard to resist.
Places of Tourist Attraction
Jaisalmer Fort
Built in 1156, Jaisalmer fort is the second oldest in Rajasthan. The fort is two hundred and fifty feet tall and reinforced by imposing 30 feet high crenellated sandstone wall. The fort has many gates including Suraj Pol, Ganesh Pol, Hawa Pol and Bhoot Pol.
Gadsisar Lake
Built in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, founder of the city of Jaisalmer, Gadsisar Lake is a scenic artificial water tank surrounded by several beautiful shrines around and a spectacular avian variety. Once Jaisalmer's sole water supply, it can be approached by its main entrance, Teelon ki Pol, which is a striking archway built by a courtesan, Teelon, with a view to immortalizing herself. The lake is an idyllic spot for outings.
Havelis
There is no doubt that Jaisalmer's real showpieces are its exotic mansions or havelis covered with latticework and floral designs. Most of these extravagant havelis were commissioned by wealthy merchants.
Patwon-ki-Haveli
The most elaborate and magnificent of all the Jaisalmer havelis is the Patwon-ki-Haveli. Built over a period of fifty years by the Patwa merchants, traders in brocades and opium, the haveli is replete with exquisitely carved pillars and extensive corridors and chambers. One of the apartments of this five-story haveli is painted with beautiful murals.
Salim Singh-Ki-Haveli
The Haveli provides the only pleasant memory of tyrannical Salim Singh. He drove the people of Jaisalmer to the state impoverishment. He was eventually killed by a furious Rajput. This extraordinary haveli in yellow stone is adorned with ornate carvings and has an elaborate protruding balcony on the top story.
Nathmalji-Ki-haveli
The late 19th century haveli is also built for a former prime minister of Jaisalmer. Its architecture is a glowing witness to the skillful craftsmanship. The interior walls of the haveli are decorated with elegant miniature paintings.
